  • New MD For Gala Bingo

    Gala Coral are the parent company of Gala Bingo and it has been a rocky year for them.  To say the least.  There were rumours, that should the bingo balls hit the fan for Gala Bingo; someone, somewhere upon the higher echelons, would find themselves apart of the most recent cut backs.  Somewhat inevitably, Simon Longbottom, managing director of Gala’s bingo and casino sector has stepped down from his post. However, despite what this may indicate, Gala Coral insist that his departure has nothing to do with their current financial ‘situation’…..

    For the time being, Mark Sargeant, who only recently became Gala’s Group Gaming Director this July, will be stepping up temporarily. Mark Sergeant spent a year in the position of Commercial Director of Gala Gaming Division; prior to becoming Group Gaming Director in July.  Although nothing has been officially announced, word on the grape vine is that Sergeant looks set to take up his new Managing Director’s position on a permanent basis.  

    Simon Longbottom will be moving on to entirely new pastures, taking up a position outside of the bingo gaming industry.  According to a report released in the Times newspaper, Longbottom implied that he would be moving into the pub trade.  Gala Coral look set to complete a deal, which should save them from total ruin, by the end of the year.  Reports indicate that Gala have debts of more than £2.5billion.  Restructuring and refinancing enabling the company to recover and manage those debts. Finalising any deal is going to be complicated.  The Gala Group has more than two hundred individual investors.

    Blackstone, an American private equity group have put £300 million on the table. It is reported that in return for this, they are looking for an equity stake of somewhere between 40% and 60%. More offer are expected, the general consensus being, if they are good enough for Blackstone, they are good enough for a lot of people.  The saga continues….

  • UK Bingo - American Style?

    America.  The land of lawsuits.  Only recently a woman won her case against an American superstore, for tens of thousands of dollars Why? Because she tripped over a child who was running in their aisles.  Bizzare thing?  The child was hers!  And, there are few who do not remember the infamous multi million pound award; made to a Mc Donalds customer, by an American court, because they were burned by the coffee they bought.  

    Well, it looks like the economic crisis is really taking its toll, or we are becoming more and more like America every day… what do I mean?  I mean, the latest news that a Scottish Bingo is being sued for £10,000 by one of their customers. Well, not so utterly American! People do sue each other… but the crux of this law suit?  It’s all over a chicken curry!

    Sandy Williams, 36, wants £10,000 compensation because she burned herself at the curry counter.  KE Entertainment own and operate Kings Premier Bingo Hall in Perth, the bingo hall being sued by Ms Williams.  According to her, she has been “scarred for life” at their hot food counter.  

    Few details have been released, as to exactly how Sandy Williams managed to get burned.  But according to Ms Williams, she was pointing at the Chicken Curry, in the HOT tray at the HOT food counter, and “before I realised, I had burnt my arm”. Since the run in with the curry tray, Ms Williams has found everyday life difficult, stating, “I still have a problem carrying shopping and things with my right hand." Looks like a long and complicated case lies ahead….

    According to Sandy Williams, the whole incident turned her bingo night into a “nightmare”.  Maybe she should try the Ceasar Salad next time?  Or order in and logon at home.  Wrap herself in some cotton wool… and so forth… Can you get a lifetime ban from Bingo halls for being a danger unto yourself?  If it isn’t.. the operators might want to start putting it in their members terms and conditions….
